Catalunya, World Region of Gastronomy 2025!
Catalunya, my beloved home since 5 years, is the World Region of Gastronomy 2025. This prestigious title, awarded by the International Institute of Gastronomy, Culture, Arts and Tourism (IGCAT), is not just an honour; it's a testament to our rich culinary heritage, innovative spirit, and deep-rooted connection to the land and sea. And for anyone passionate about wine and food travel, this is truly a monumental announcement.
Why Catalunya? A Culinary Tapestry
What makes Catalunya so special? The diversity and passion create a truly unique gastronomic landscape:
- Diversity of Terroir: From the Pyrenees mountains to the Mediterranean coast, and from the fertile plains to the volcanic landscapes, Catalunya boasts an incredible variety of ecosystems. This translates directly into a bounty of diverse ingredients – fresh seafood, mountain lamb, exquisite olive oils, and an unparalleled array of fruits and vegetables.
- Innovation and Tradition: Catalunya is home to some of the world's most avant-garde culinary pioneers, like Ferran Adrià, whose influence redefined modern gastronomy. Yet, this innovation is deeply rooted in centuries of tradition, with recipes passed down through generations, celebrating humble ingredients and time-honoured techniques.
- Quality Produce: We pride ourselves on the quality of our local produce, supported by numerous Denominations of Origin (DO) for wines, cheeses, oils, and other regional specialties. This commitment to quality is evident on every plate.
- Vibrant Markets and Festivals: Our towns and cities thrum with lively markets, showcasing seasonal produce and regional delicacies. Throughout the year, countless gastronomic festivals celebrate everything from calçots (spring onions) to mushrooms and seafood, offering immersive cultural experiences.
Tasty Catalunya
The last week I was invited to join this gastronomic travel event with more than 70 touroperators from all over the world. After attending the workshop with new and existing partners it was time to travel to one of the regions to experience the wealth of Catalunya ourselves, not only in food and wine but also in culture and nature. Have a look at the impression of these trips.
