Empordà is a region of contrasts where sea and mountains meet. Small fishing towns and beautiful beaches on the Costa Brava with medieval towns inland. Characteristic is the northern wind, the tramontane, which influences the wines.
Empordà is one of the oldest wine regions and Roman archaeological excavations in Platja d'Aro and Tossa de Mar show the remains of this wine production. Since the 12th century wine has also been produced in monasteries by monks. The Monastery of Sant Pere de Rodes is an example of this.
The region is best known for its red wines. However, beautiful white and rosé wines as well as cava and sweet wines Moscatel and Garnatxa de l'Empordà are produced.
