Peralada: castle, winery, resort and more!
When you visit Peralada in the region of Empordà in the Northern part of Catalunya you step back in times. From the firste Iberian fortress, through the Middle Ages to the present day. Castell de Peralada
The enchanting Peralada Castle, a 14th-century fortress with its two imposing towers, is surrounded by breathtaking gardens designed by François Duvillers. Inside in the Castle Museum you can admire the library, with some one hundred thousand volumes and the private ceramic and glass collection, considered the most important in Spain with more than two thousand five hundred pieces. Also various examples of the porron that is used to drink wine from a distance so it can passed from hand by hand.
But there is more to see like the extensive exhibition of objects in the Wine Museum as well as the room about Hispano-Suiza. This famous Suqué-Mateu automobile company was founded in 1904 by the great-grandfather of the current owners. All of these very different subjects makes a visit to the museum a surprising one.
Casino and Festival Castell Peralada
Within the Castle you will find Casino Peralada en it also hosts the cultural festival during Summer. The Peralada Castle is the place to be during the months of July and August if you want to have a special night at a concert in the garden or small-format opera in the church and cloister. Perelada Winery
A few meters from the Castell is the imposing Perelada winery, designed by the 2017 Pritzker-winning architects, the RCR studio. It is an amazing building integrated into the natural environment and using environmentally friendly energy sources. Because of this it was the first winery in Europe to achieve Leed Gold sustainability certification.
Many people ask me if I do not get bored visiting wineries, like if you visited one you visited all of them. I can honestly say it never bores and every winery is different because of the history (here more than six centuries), their passion and in this case definitely the architecture. Gastronomy at Peralada
After a visit to the winery you can have a nice lunch at the Celler 1923 Wine Bar or at the Michelin-starred restaurant, where Chef Javi Martínez reinterprets Catalan cuisine with finesse. This restaurant is located within the Castle.
